The Real Cost of Books Nobody Quite Trusts
March 24, 2026 · Short insight · 1 min read

Every growing business reaches the same point. The person who used to close the books at midnight cannot anymore, and the numbers have quietly stopped being something anyone fully relies on.
It rarely announces itself as a bookkeeping problem. It shows up as a hiring decision that keeps slipping, a price set on instinct, or a board meeting where the management accounts are waved past with a promise to firm them up next month.
The measurable cost (hours, salaries, software) is the small part. The compounding cost is every decision taken on figures that needed verifying first, which is far harder to price and far easier to ignore until it is expensive.
That is the argument for treating the finance function as infrastructure rather than an errand. Not because the errand is difficult, but because of everything built on top of it.
