Chart of Accounts: The Least Glamorous Decision You Will Make
March 10, 2026 · Short insight · 1 min read

A chart of accounts is the least discussed document in a company's financial life and quietly the most consequential. Management accounts, board reporting and tax filings all trace back to how a transaction was categorised at the moment it was entered.
The common mistake is not a missing account. It is a structure borrowed from a template that does not match how this business makes decisions: a services company running a retail chart, or a multi-branch operation with no way to see branch performance without exporting to a spreadsheet first.
Getting it right at setup, before the first parallel run and before a year of live entries, is the difference between a reporting framework that answers questions on its own and one that needs somebody to rebuild the answer every time.
It is also close to the only part of a finance function that is genuinely cheap to fix early and genuinely painful to fix late.
